Money laundering charges must be handled carefully

Money laundering occurs when money that’s made from illegal activities is put through various steps to make it appear like it was legally earned. This includes moving the money through businesses, accounts, and transactions so it’s difficult or impossible to trace. The entire purpose of this process is concealment.

A person who’s being accused of money laundering should understand exactly what that means. One of the most important things to know in these cases is that there likely needs to be intent present. This is a cornerstone of this charge because it shows that the law is being deliberately broken.

Money laundering cases are complex

Money laundering cases often involve considerable amounts of paperwork, primarily because of the number of events that occur during the laundering process. Bank transfers, shell companies, cash deposits, business accounts and digital transactions all become part of the records.

Prosecutors often organize these activities into distinct steps, which are placement, layering and integration. These refer to the specific purpose of an activity. Placement means putting the illegal funds into the financial system. Layering involves moving them around to make their origin unclear. Integration means putting them back into the financial system to be used without arousing suspicion.

It’s sometimes possible that innocent actions, such as having multiple accounts or having several transactions, may be construed as money laundering. This is when determining if intent is present becomes a central factor in a criminal justice case.

Facing charges for money laundering requires a comprehensive defense strategy that introduces doubt about the claims the prosecutor is making. This can be challenging to establish, so it’s likely best to work with someone familiar with these matters.
